MEGATHREAD "What are you playing this week?" Megathread

Due to the high volume of very similar posts asking what r/SteamDeck users were playing, this weekly megathread has been created to have a singular place to hold this very frequent discussion and limit duplicate posts. Feel free to share what you have been playing on your Steam Deck or even post pictures in this thread and show us if you wish!

Software Modding MoonDeck development is stopping

Hello!

I've been developing MoonDeck (a Decky plugin) for nearly 4 years and 10 months. It's finally time to hang up my hat.

If you're interested in taking over the project, contact me on Decky's Discord (preferably in MoonDeck's support channel) and we'll figure out how to hand it over. Otherwise, the process of removing the plugin from the store will start at the end of this month.

I never really made a post about this plugin on Reddit, but I've seen posts about it here and there (for better or for worse...), so I decided to at least let people know šŸ˜†.

The biggest reason for this decision is that Steam Remote Play has simply become too good recently (it took them 4+ years, but better late than never). So good, in fact, that for my use case I'd been accidentally streaming over Wi-Fi instead of LAN without being any the wiser, all while thinking "oh, this is so much better than my current setup". I only realized it when my router became a choke point at certain times of the day, because Steam was using Wi-Fi instead of LAN (see https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamOS/issues/2512 for more info and a workaround). At this point, I see no reason to use Moonlight anymore.

That's all, folks! It was a nice experience while it lasted!

Discussion Steam deck paralysis

Anybody else getting steam deck gaming Paralysis, every time I fancy playing on it sat on the sofa, I just spend 10min looking at my installed games, then my library, look at my emulators…. Then close it down and put it back away. Then if I find something I feel like I’m forcing myself to try something I give up after a few minutes not really getting invested into it.

I’ve had my steam deck for 3 years now. Loved it at the start. But for the last 18 months I doubt I’ve played a total of 1 hour in actual games in it.

Gaming isn’t the issue, when I’m at my parents with my PC (my partner doesn’t have space for a PC in her small apartment) I can spend hours on it.

How to Play PokeBonk on Steam Deck

I managed to get PokeBonk running on the Steam Deck, and it's fully playable!

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to set it up.

1. Set up Firefox in Desktop Mode

  1. Switch your Steam Deck to Desktop Mode.
  2. Add Mozilla Firefox to Steam using the Add to Steam option.
  3. Open Mozilla Firefox and type about:config into the address bar.
  4. Click Accept the Risk and Continue if the warning message appears.

Disable the fullscreen warning

  1. Search for full-screen-api.warning.timeout in the search box.
  2. Click the pencil icon to edit the value.
  3. Change the value from 3000 (3 seconds) to 0.
  4. Search for full-screen-api.warning.delay.
  5. Click the pencil icon to edit the value.
  6. Change the value to -1.

Disable the pointer lock warning

  1. Search for pointer-lock-api.warning.timeout.
  2. Double-click the preference and change its value to 0.

2. Configure Firefox in Gaming Mode

  1. Switch back to Gaming Mode.
  2. Find Mozilla Firefox in your Steam library.
  3. Open Properties and go to Launch Options.
  4. Replace the existing launch options with the following:

text

"run" "--branch=stable" "--arch=x86_64" "--command=firefox" "--file-forwarding" "org.mozilla.firefox" "@@u" "@@" "--kiosk" "--url" "https://pokebonk.com/"
  1. Rename the game from Mozilla Firefox to PokeBonk.
  2. Launch the game!

3. Recommended Controller Layout

Press the STEAM button and configure the controls to your liking.

Here's the layout I use:

  • Left Joystick: Joystick (8-way overlap), WASD
  • Right Joystick: Mouse
  • LT: Space
  • LB: Mouse Scroll Down
  • RT: Left Mouse Click
  • RB: Mouse Scroll Up
  • A Button: E (Keyboard)
  • X Button: R (Keyboard)

That's it! You should now be able to play PokeBonk on your Steam Deck.

Have fun! šŸŽ®

Article HelixSR Adds Custom HLX FSR 4 Upscaler With 3.1 Update - SteamDeckHQ

HelixSR’s 3.1 update launched earlier today, and interestingly, it brought with it a brand new upscaler. We now have HLX FSR 4, which seems to be a custom version of the upscaler. It appears to be a specialized implementation of FSR 4 that extends functionality and implements new optimizations to make setup faster and run on more GPUs. This allows FSR 4 to run on more GPUs with extra optimizations to make it better.

I still need to test HLX FSR 4 vs FSR 4.1.2 Lite, but it sounds like it could be another option for upscaling that could improve the experience on the Steam Deck!

Is there a way to fix the screen touch distance problem

Even though I use the touchpad sometimes in other games for the cursor and touch screen the distance is quite far so it's difficult to press it.

Configuration Streaming From a Linux/SteamOS Desktop to Steam Deck, or How I Finally Figured Out How to Match Aspect Ratios

Post image
15 Upvotes

This is probably a better fit for something like r/steamOS, but figured I would share here in case anyone has shared my frustrations around streaming from a 16/9 aspect ratio Linux/SteamOS Desktop to the 16/10 steam deck:

Apparently, Linux is limited in it's ability to swap aspect ratios on the fly in the way that you can do on Windows. So, if your monitor is 16/9 (which will be most everyone), and you stream to your steam deck, you won't have a full screen image when you select a 16/10 resolution (like 800p) in game, even if you have the remote play settings set to 800p. The advanced host setting to change the resolution to match the client isn't even displayed. However, in SteamOS Desktop, I've found a very simple workaround in game mode:

On your desktop: select a game, open the settings cog, then open properties. Select the Maximum Game Resolution setting, scroll to the bottom and open More options, then select a 16/10 resolution. My monitor is 1440p, and I used the 1600p option. Now when you stream your game, you can achieve a 16/10 aspect ratio for glorious fullscreen handheld gaming! I'm betting this would work if you set your global max res setting to 16/10 as well, though I have not tested that, and you would want to set it to a resolution greater than your monitors so that you aren't limiting your desktop experience.

Tech Support Using SteamOS UI in-game causes system crash

• Upvotes

I posted a little while back, but I have a better understanding of what is happening now. After the latest steam client update a few weeks ago, my steam deck crashes under any of the following conditions:

Crashes when:

  • Playing game in Steam and pressing the Steam button
  • Playing game in Steam and pressing volume up or volume down
  • Playing game in Steam and pressing "..." quick-settings button
  • The above occur when game is launched via handheld or desktop mode

The game freezes, the screen goes black and the system restarts.

Importantly, the system does not crash under the following conditions:

  • Playing a non-Steam game or app (for example, emudeck) and pressing volume, Steam, or "..." buttons
  • Pressing volume, Steam, or "..." buttons in the main menu
  • Pressing volume, Steam, or "..." buttons in desktop mode (not in-game)
  • Playing game in Steam after rolling back to previous client version

Troubleshooting attempts have included:

  • Trying different Proton version
  • Opting into SteamOS Beta
  • Factory Reset
  • Re-imaging SteamOS (wiping all data and re-installing SteamOS)
  • Battery storage mode
  • Resetting firmware and BIOS (This is the only troubleshooting method that I was not able to fully complete because the system never turned back on like Valve suggests it does. I had to manually restart the system to get it out of the 'blinking LED' state)

For additional context, the system does not have/has never had DeckyLoader installed.

After re-imaging last night, I don't have an old version of Steam client to roll back to since the data was wiped. I don't know what to try next, but I'm desperate for any ideas I, or Valve, may have missed. (Still waiting to hear back from Valve on my most recent Steam Support ticket update)

Hey guys, so after 3 years of everyday use my R button gave out and I was wondering if I should take it to a repair shop or just buy the daughter board online and replace it myself and what would be the best place to find that daughter board (I’m balling on a budget)

Tech Support Docked SD + KBM + 1080p monitor - WoW

We are going to have a launch lan party with friends for WoW Forever. Game is not accessible right now and wont be before the launch - but besides little bit disappointing performance I noticed one quirk that seem to be somewhat common - when I clicked the mouse to for example move camera (but not related to movement itself) game microstuttered. And it's consistent, if I spam click, game is presentation.
I was doing some updating and testing yesterday on different (accessible) version of WoW - Classic and the same quirk happened there (but performance was amazing, incredible).

I am split on whether to pack main PC which will be PITA or yolo it with SD and hope for best (main rig is too AMD system, CachyOS, no such issues with mouse in neither version of WoW).

Did you guys encountered the click/stutter issue, is there a known fix? I googled and found few rabbit holes with no clear 'fix' unfortunately, however, it looks like this issue is well known for about 2 years.
Other question would be general tips and tricks on performance uplift, although, I understand that new engine and graphics of WoW Forever is probably too much for SD, every bit counts!

Question ProtonDB issues

I am getting this error while trying to register my Steam Deck through ProtonDB. It's the first time I thought I should be helpful since the last post on Lemon Cake was from a year ago and of course it's deciding to punish me for trying to do so 😭

Am I missing something? I am clearly in desktop mode, and I truthfully don't know how to fix this issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated :3

So I have had my deck for about a year and today was playing Warframe and i kept getting yanked to my left at random not fully but more a step or two to the left Ive figured it out to be stick drift yet it’s only on the left side and directly to the left im not sure what could have caused it to be that extreme in that one spot and Ive never delt with stick drift like this, what can I do outside of the deadzone do I contact valve? Is this something i can fix myself? I’m really not sure about what to do it’s nowhere near ā€œdireā€ I’m just worried that the effect will continue to get worse

I managed to make PokeBonk work on Steamdeck (gaming mode). It runs very well but sometimes movement input is bugged and your Poke move some way until you choose this direction with analog stick (it gets bugged sometimes when you move and rotate camera). Other that that its completely playable

Question Major deck slowdown after latest firmware?

I got a Switch 2 in september, in anticipation of some of the exclusives, so my deck was sat docked for about a month

I loaded it up the other day and did the usual updates, and now om getting a lot of lag. Like even menus are stuttery, games that normally ran smoothly are suddenly having FPS drops out of nowhere.

Ive checked TDP settings and all seems normal and I only use stable channel for updates

Had the latest firmware updates caused problems for anyone else? I havent installed or downloaded anything except the updates, so nothing else on my deck has changed. No plugins or anything

Discussion NeoStation - a beautiful emulation frontend with RetroAchievements support

Thumbnail

I've just found my favorite emulation frontend for SteamDeck. It's called NeoStation - https://neostation.dev/

I wanted to share because I couldn't find any other posts about this frontend on this subreddit. I love it because it looks beautiful and supports RetroAchievements so you can see all your achievements the way it's done on all modern front-ends (PS, Xbox, Steam). It also supports cloud saves and I like it much more then Emulation Station because of these reasons.

I'm not affiliated just enjoying it heaps.

Tech Support Don't Starve Together with keyboard and mouse?

My son and I tried to play DST last night. We'd played a few years ago and it worked fine, but this time the game keeps insisting on using the controller. Does anyone know how to force it to work with keyboard and mouse? Googling brings up others with the same problem, but the solutions they list don't seem to work for us.

Question Streaming Settings

Hey!

I've been trying to find the answer to this myself but I'm having a hard time. I stream a lot to my Deck, but I also play the same games on my desktop occasionally. For anyone else that does this, how do you reconcile settings on the host for a decent experience in both scenarios? Do I even need to when streaming uses virtual displays now? When playing on my desktop I use G-Sync/V-Sync, but does that setting carry over into the virtual displays that streaming uses?

I don't mind changing a few in game settings when streaming, but I'd like to not have to mess with the Nvidia app or RTSS or much else when getting the stream running.
