Given that literally no one else knew Peter Parker is just a guy who actually exists, no one else could've pushed Peter to confront his persona-dilemma when it really mattered except Jean Grey. I'm not saying her methods were right. But who knows if Peter would've succumbed to his mutation before he even got to decide who he really is or wanna be.
