General What are some good Singaporean brands and businesses that deserves their support?

I am think we should give support to local Singaporean businesses and brands that are actually worth supporting. I believe our community can make a real impact by shifting our spending toward high-quality, homegrown brands and businesses.

I am also referring to authentic Singaporean-made goods or businesses. When it comes to brands, I want to avoid those that simply slap their logos on OEM products, hire questionable influencers, or use deceptive advertising methods.

General Singapore or Dutch citizenship?

Hi everyone! I have dual citizenship for the Netherlands and Singapore. I need to give up one citizenship soon but am having a hard time choosing. For context: I was born and raised in Singapore with one Singaporean parent and one Dutch parent. And I spent the last few years in the Netherlands. With the Dutch citizenship I have access to the EU. But with Singaporean citizenship I would get great food, weather, low taxes, and low crime rates. However, I remember feeling so trapped growing up in Singapore and am afraid if I choose Singapore that I’ll feel the same again. But I’m also afraid of losing all the pros that come with Singapore if I choose Dutch, especially because the food and weather are horrible in the Netherlands, along with high taxes and crime. Any advice is welcomed. What would you choose and why? Thanks!

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG At the 90th percentile, are there any other cities that are better paid than Singapore post-tax?

I've been trying to do my research in this heavily due to desires of emigration, but I genuinely can't find a single city that pays better, post-tax, assuming similar percentiles, other than Zurich. Even NYC and San Francisco comes out to be roughly the same, but with much much higher cost of living in those cities. In every other place on Earth, to have a salary on par with what you earn in Singapore, it seems like you have to be placed at a much higher percentile among the population comparatively.

For anyone who has also done research into this, is Singapore genuinely the best place other than Switzerland if you solely care about capital accumulation?

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Opportunities for Post Grad in Finance

Hey everyone!

I am currently looking for someone who can advise me on what to consider if i were to pursue a Masters in Finance locally

It costs $46k after tuition grant discount but my main motivation to do it is to potentially break into M&A or corporate finance (incl. FP&A etc)

I came from an econs background and just want to know on whether the 1 yr prog at NUS would be viable, given that i can legally qualify for internships during my student tenure to have a shot at this

Had applied to 200+ jobs previously but i find that i am really not a good fit for my current role, i just want to pursue a more quantitative role

I am currently doing my CFA as well and picking up valuation on the sideline while juggling a FT role, i just think that it's a matter of timing and whether I can still make up for the lost time in my undergrad days

I only discovered more jobs during my career fair in my senior years for uni which i was interested to know more, so i really lost out on the time that could have gone into deepening my skills for the relevant industry that i want to break into.

Would appreciate if anyone can share their thoughts on the pros and cons of doing a MsC in finance or even general considerations before i make this commitment to myself. Thanks in adv!

Looking For The Cage Futsal for Singapore Seniors

Hi all, I am in my 40s and would like join leisure soccer matches to get some cardio into my life. Youths and younger adults can be quite rough at times so I prefer playing with people who are slightly older who enjoys the game.

I did some research but was unable to find what I am looking for so would appreciate some directions/advice/suggestions on where I should look? Location wise, I would prefer The Cage at Dempsey since it's quite central to where I stay but open to other options as long as not too far from central/south Singapore.

Thanks in advance!

General Should I just get a new PC from Aftershock or fix my current one?

I'm looking for some advice from people who actually know their PCs because I'm completely clueless when it comes to this.

For some context, I have a custom-built PC that a friend helped me build back in 2022. Initially built it cos I wanted to get into PC gaming but lo and behold, I pretty much only play MLBB now LOL.

A few months back, my monitor kept randomly losing signal even though my PC was still running. Brought it for repairs about 4 months ago and apparently all it needed was some cleaning? It was fine after that buttt now the same issue is back again 🥲

I've recently started a new job and wouldn't mind spending a little to upgrade my entire setup. That said, I don't need anything super powerful since I'm really just a casual gamer and mainly use it for entertainment/work.

Currently using an RTX 3060, which from what I've heard is still pretty decent for casual gaming? Also heard that GPU prices are quite crazy now so idk if it even makes sense to replace my whole PC.

Sooo just wanted to ask:

  1. Is it worth getting a prebuilt PC from Aftershock? Are they reliable or are there better options out there?
  2. Should I just get my current PC fixed again? A bit sian cos I literally just got it repaired 4 months ago and I'm worried the same issue will keep coming back.
  3. Any other PC shops/builders in SG you'd recommend for someone who knows absolutely nothing about PCs?

Not looking for anything super fancy, just want a decent PC that can last me a few more years without having to worry about random issues 😭

Would appreciate any advice!

edit:
here are my specs as requested:

5600X
Asrock B550 Steel Legend
Gigabyte Vision OC RTX3060
ID Cooling Pinkflow 240 AIO
16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 3200Mhz
Lexar NM620 512GB SSD
Coolermaster 650W MWE Gold PSU

edit2: it's not a monitor issue cos my monitor stays on when i'm in recovery mood... but the moment i boot up windows it loses signal :/

General Old CDs - possible to recycle somewhere?

Hi all,

I want to dispose of some CDs that cannot be played any longer and I tried all sorts of methods, thinking that maybe someone can use them to scare birds or to do some arts&crafts. Olio, Carousell, FB - none is interested so I just want to make sure: is the best option now just to dispose them in the normal waste?

Let me know your thoughts 😁

Looking For Lawyer recommendation for financial advice

I am helping a family in financial distress facing debt collection. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone to give legal advice and help give options (including consideration for bankruptcy) for this family to move forward. Any rough estimates for the legal fees for such advice ?

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG To whose who have graduated from private degree in Kaplan like Murdoch, how’s your career like now?

its been 5 years since someone posted about career in kaplan, and the economy is much worse, i am specifically studying in accounting and finance currently.

since i have literally zero prior experience , it's definitely going to be hard to find a job. So i am gonna ask about internships, is it manageable to get into an audit internship as a private grad?

have u managed to ventured from audit to fp&a analyst (or other roles) afterwards?

how much do u think the degree has helped you? is there anything that u have to learnt outside your own apart from the degree when u started on your intern/job?

Looking For Looking for Dress Alteration service

Hi everyone!

I um.. bought a expensive dress from an iconic scene in a movie.

It's my wife's childhood favourite movie and she once tipsily mentioned that all dresses she buys has been to chase the look and feel and this dress for the longest time. Anyway, it's impossible to get this dress and it appears like once every 6 months on the market and almost always get snatched up for an absurd price. I was down the Depop / Poshmark / Etsy rabbit hole for years, my ISO listings had over 2000+ likes and saves from others, offers and failure after failure to secure the thing, American PO boxes, routing blah. I've chased this thing for 4 years. My last window had me trying to surprise her for the wedding but the seller went MIA at the last second.

And here we are. Today is not the day I am left with only the mental anguish of this silent war I've been fighting BUT THE DAY WE MOVE to the NEXT STEP and our 1 year anniversary + her birthday is coming up.

Long story short, it's 3-4 sizes too big (Yes I record her 3 sizes, ring and shoes) and I need to alter this dress. No rush I still have over 2 months. I'm seeking help fellow Singaporeans, I need a recommendation for a tailor, I'm thinking wedding dress tailors or someone who can do sizing down of clothes that are slightly complex? Price wise the sky's the limit, I just need someone who can alter this thing confidently.

Thanks for reading my long story that I've not been able to tell anyone.

TLDR: I bought my wife a rare dress that requires sizing down, please recommend anyone who is skilled in alterations. TIA

Edit: Thank you so so much for your helpful responses, I will be checking in with some of these this week. As mentioned by many I may have to bring my partner in. I'm going to put that as the last resort so for now I'll just "borrow" a already altered piece of clothing I know she has and have the tailor work on the dress based on those measurements. If really cannot then I will have to ask her but I prefer to keep it a surprise for now.
Again, thank you everyone, the comments have been super super helpful.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Fresh Graduates with Severe Anxiety: How Are You Coping with the Job Search?

Fresh grad here trying to find a more manageable job like KYC but most of these jobs are either offshored or replaced by AI.

Now you really have to upskill and learn things fast and constantly...otherwise you will fall even further behind.

My resume isn't impressive either because i spent the bulk of my time dealing with my anxiety issues.

And even if i am fortunate enough to get invited for an interview outside of my preferred job scope, the imposter syndrome (Or just anxiety) is there.

Just wondering if there's anyone like this.

P.S: Btw I did post this in r/singaporejobs as well to gain more opinions. No intention of karma farming or what, I swear upon my life I don't care about the karma, sorry if you see the same post twice. I am just desperate

Looking For Finding the right international school in Singapore (Balance over burnout)

My brother and his wife are gearing up for a family move to Singapore later this year with their 10 and 14-year-olds, and school hunting is currently at the top of their list. I’ve heard plenty of stories about the intense, high-pressure academic culture there, and that's honestly a bit of a worry for us.

Good IGCSE and IB results are important, but we aren't looking for a factory-style environment where academics swallow up everything else. They want their kids to actually enjoy their school years. My oldest nephew is heavily into competitive swimming, and my youngest nephew is completely obsessed with the performing arts.

If anyone has recommendations for international schools that deliver strong academic outcomes while still leaving room for a well-rounded, active life outside the classroom, I would love to hear them.

General Super Cheap Dinner in CBD (Raffles Place/Boat Quay)

Budget: $3-6

Like chicken rice level. The only thing that comes to mind at that price range are the few stores that stay open after 6pm at capspring. Or a longer walk to Chinatown which is kinda a waste of time.

Genuinely going insane eating $12 dinners when I OT knowing I can be eating a solid $5 dinner near home.

General Does your parent treat outsiders much better than how they treat their own children?

Just wondering whether it is the "norm" in Singapore.

My dad treats his siblings (my uncles and aunties) and outsiders much better than his own family. He will always be forgiving towards his siblings even if they borrow money from him and never returned the money, saying that siblings should take care of each other. And he will always be very charitable to outsiders whenever they make mistakes so as not to offend them.

But when it comes to his own wife and kids, he will scream, shout, scold and insult us whenever we do not meet his unreasonable expectations. And he will always demand my mom to do this and that even when she is sick. Worst part is that he often threw his temper at us even though we are the ones helping him at his lowest while his siblings didn't bother to check in on him.

General Where to hide from HDB power outage?

HDB's Improvement Program (HIP) is going to upgrade my block's electricity and will cut off the power of my entire block tomorrow from 9am to 6pm at Pasir Ris.

Me and my wife being two retirees at home and not very much into exploring nature, where can we go to "hide" for the whole day tomorrow, especially the early morning part around 9am when most shopping malls are not open yet?

BTW, we don't own a car (though we can rent one if there's somewhere to go that's worth the trouble/cost).

General Storing books/manga in this environment

As the title says, i'm currently in the process of getting a shelf for my books and manga, previously i used to keep my books in a dark corner in my room, my room doesn't have aircon and i'm wondering what steps to take to maintain them. I've heard about risks of silverfish infestation and molding with this humidity, any ways to prevent it?
